It is not practical to think about walking because the hike back up the mountain is quite challenging. The advantage to being here in the mountains is that we have cool breezes and practically no mosquitos or other biting insects. My building is on the Zattere -- i.e. the waterfront of the Giudecca Canal (the large canal where the huge cruise liners enter the city). It is very near to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. The owner of Harry's Bar is my next door neighbor. John Berendt wrote his book Venice, The City of Falling Angels, in my apartment.
The special qualities of the apartment are visible in the photographs. I occupy the penthouse of a building that dates from around 1900. It measures around 100 square meters (900 square feet) with a living room, a study, two bedrooms (one very spacious with a queen bed, the other smaller with a single bed only), a walk-in closet, a small kitchen, a small bath and – the joy of the house – a wrap-around terrace. The terrace overlooks the water and gives an unparalleled view not only of three churches by Palladio (the Redentore, the Zitelle, and San Giorgio Maggiore) but also of the Giudecca Island, the lagoon, and the Lido beyond. Other rooms in the house overlook the city. It is unique in Venice.
Amenities: The beds are good, the furnishings a typical Venetian mix of old and new, and the same is true of the linens. There are marble and wood floors inside, tile outside. The bathroom, on two levels, is basic. The kitchen is small. There is a fine library on Venetian art and life, with many books in English. There is wireless Internet and machines for washing dishes and clothes. Flowers flourish on the terrace. It accommodates three people very comfortably. It is a very romantic environment for two.
There are disadvantages, the most significant being that there is no elevator. Visitors must understand that the place requires them to be vigorous! (It is on the equivalent of the fifth floor, American style). There is no air-conditioning, although it is situated at a curve of the canal that usually provides cooling breezes. For people of cultural curiosity and strong legs, the apartment offers a wonderful experience of living like a Venetian.

There is an entrance to Riverside Park/Hudson River only steps from the building entrance. It’s a five-minute – three block - walk to the IRT #1 line (145th Street station) and a seven-minute – three block - walk to the IND A,B,C,D trains (145TH Street station - 148th St. entrance). The trip to Columbus Circle is only two express stops away on the A or D trains and will take approximately 20 minutes. Fairway Supermarket* is a 20-minute walk away from the apartment or easily accessible via subway or bus.
The apartment has both North and South exposures. There is a full-size kitchen with significant polished stone counter space, as well as a dishwasher, microwave, a brick oven and a bar opening to the living/dining room area. All windows have Hunter Douglas blinds. Floors are Brazilian cherry wood. The master bedroom is very large with a walk-in closet and a full marble bath. Additionally, there is a storage room in the apartment with a trash compactor. The apartment also has a washer/dryer and separate linen closet. There is a separate entrance to the fire stairs.
The furnishings include several Oriental rugs; a collection of beautifully framed antique maps in the living room as well as two full-size framed silent film posters. In the hallway is a large antique gilded mirror and in the dining room area is a modern Shaker-style glass and steel dining room table with six chairs designed and created by a sculptor who has a piece at Storm King, among others. Also in the living room are a full size silk and wool Oriental rug, an antique drum table and sofas, one of which is a turn-of-the-century Windsor settee and another that is a Civil-War-era camelback sofa with hand-carved chestnut dragooning along the bottom and acanthus leaf along the top. In the front bedroom is an antique brass bed while the master bedroom has a queen-size mahogany four-poster bed.
The third bedroom/study has a brand new leather sofa with a full queen-size Tempurpedic-like pullout bed as well as bookshelves and an antique bird’s eye maple architect's desk with a leather armchair.
